Morton Salt Group: “Off-the-Job Safety Program”

CASE STUDY – 2004 Salute to Home Safety Excellence Award Winner

Award Overview:

The Home Safety Council awarded the Morton Salt Group, a subsidiary of the Rohm and Haas Company, with the 2004 Salute to Home Safety Excellence Award to recognize the company’s effective and educational Off-the-Job safety program.

Morton Salt’s ongoing commitment to provide every employee with skills and knowledge to be free of personal injury led to the development of the Off-the-Job safety program. The campaign components are designed to increase safety awareness among both employees and their families. Each of the Salt Group’s 35 facilities participates in the program, and contributes through newsletters, contests and community projects focusing on personal safety education.

Program Overview:

• Health and Safety Newsletters: Published quarterly, the newsletter contains time-relevant safety articles and tips, safety activities for children, and features “Safety Hero” employees.
• Family Activities: Facilities hold Family Safety Days and have elementary school program courses.
• Community Involvement: The Salt Group plans many events to involve the community in safety awareness, such as festivals and blood drives.
• Safety Contest: Safety contests are held to spread the message of safety and motivate families to be safer in the home.
• Emergency Preparedness: The Salt Group provides homeland disaster prevention checklists and family readiness guides.
• Fire Safety Month: The Salt Group provides all employees with smoke alarm batteries during Fire Safety Month with reminders to routinely check smoke alarms to ensure proper functionality.
