2002 Salute to Home Safety Excellence Award Winner

Award Overview:

The 2002 Salute to Home Safety Excellence Award was given to MTD Products, Inc. for their program, "Think Safe: Safety around the House, Around the Yard." Employees at six of MTD facilities created programs that focused on general home safety, lawn mower safety, poison prevention and emergency preparedness.

Program Overview

MTD utilized a variety of methods to help educate the community, including working with secondary resources to support each program with signage, a newsletter, handouts and guest speakers. MTD employees also distributed brochures and safety calendars in factories, homes, schools and libraries throughout the communities. The campaign also sought to increase awareness among MTD employees by using bulletin board postings, monthly and quarterly newsletters and the MTD Intranet Web site.

Examples of MTD's safety program results:

• Overall, the six safety programs had the potential to reach 350,000 people*
• More than 200 children and their families received lawn mower safety information and family emergency plans
• Forty-eight boy scouts in the Martin, Tenn. area completed safety and American Red Cross certification for basic aid training
