THE HOME SAFETY COUNCIL DEVELOPS NATIONAL FIRE PREVENTION PROGRAM FOR OLDER ADULTS Fire Safety for Older Adults Program Aims to Prevent Fire Related Injuries Research conducted by the Home Safety Council shows that fire is the third leading cause of home injury and related death, and older adults are significantly more vulnerable if a home fire were to strike. Older adults are also twice as likely to suffer injuries or lose their lives in fires or falls than the overall population. This Fire Safety for Older Adults program includes program materials and a video to help teach older adults about fire safety. HSC encourages all family members and caregivers to inform individuals 65 years and older to prevent at home injuries during a fire. “Older adults are at an extremely high risk of suffering from an injury or related death during a fire in the home,” said Meri-K Appy, president of the Home Safety Council. “This program emphasizes home improvement, behavioral and lifestyle tips which can help older adults be All-Ways Fire Safe at Home and can prevent an injury from occurring.” Program Materials include: Program materials were created by Weekly Reader Corporation Custom Publishing.
