HOME SAFETY COUNCIL’S THE GREAT SAFETY ADVENTURE®

A “FIELD TRIP ON WHEELS"

Created by the Home Safety Council and funded through grants from the Lowe's Charitable and Educational Foundation, The Great Safety Adventure is a nearly 1,000 square foot home that teaches kids and their families how to avoid the five most common household dangers including: falls, poisoning, fires and burns, choking and suffocation and drowning. The interactive exhibit is celebrating its tenth anniversary on the road and visiting local schools and Lowe's stores throughout the nation, bringing home safety practice to life for children in a fun and entertaining way.

WHERE’S THE DANGER?

An adult “Safety Ranger”, with the help of children, points out home dangers in each room of the exhibit. Inspired by the Home Safety Council’s mascot – Rover, the Home Safety Hound – each time a danger is identified, children are prompted to say “Code Red Rover, Grown-Up Come Over,” reinforcing the importance of involving an adult in correcting home dangers. Once the children spot a danger and shine their flashlights on it, the danger is made to magically disappear.

GET LOW AND GO

Each room of The Great Safety Adventure reinforces to children that working with their parents to make a few simple changes at home can save lives. In the bedroom, children learn the importance of having working smoke alarms and creating a family fire escape plan. They learn that if they see smoke in a home, they should use a second way out; or crouch and crawl under the smoke to a safe meeting place outside. In the exhibit, children escape to safety as harmless artificial smoke fills the bedroom, simulating what to do in case of a fire emergency in their own home.
