Technology Used to Support Relay Signals from Home Alarms Scheduled to Cease in 2008 In a letter dated March 7, 2007, HSC President, Meri-K Appy, recently urged FCC Chairman, Kevin Martin, to extend a proposed February 2008 sunset on the use of Advanced Mobile Phone System (AMPS) technology. AMPS technology is widely used to support relay alarm signal from homes and businesses to alarm companies that monitor for fires, burglaries, carbon monoxide poisonings, and medical emergencies. "Our seniors who are at risk of fall related injury are especially affected," stated Appy, adding that thousands of people who use electronic emergency pendants depend heavily on AMPS technology in case of emergencies. The FCC has ordered the conversion of the analog spectrum currently used for public safety and alarm radio devices to digital technology by February 2008. Alarm manufacturers has expressed concern citing the lack of time and supply to install both new digital devices and convert existing analog units before the 2008 sunset date. Absent an extension, thousands of home and businesses that still depend on AMPS will find themselves vulnerable to a range of dangers. To view the full letter click here |
