Home Safety Month 2008

During the month of June, the Home Safety Council celebrated Home Safety Month with the launch of MySafeHome.org and the release of new room-by-room home safety research. The national Home Safety Month campaign focused on the five leading causes of home injury-related death and encouraged the public to take simple steps to reduce the risk of injury in each area of the home.

Campaign Highlights Include:

  • MySafeHome.org: HSC launched a new, interactive home injury prevention teaching tool just in time for Home Safety Month. MySafeHome.org invites visitors into a virtual home where state-of-the-art digital animation identifies major risk areas, room-by-room, indoors and out, and presents the key safety devices and preparedness plans that are important for every safe home.
  • New Educational Materials: HSC debuted a new bilingual brochure providing key tips to help families prepare for emergency situations. The Are You Ready for a Disaster? resource includes instructional photographs and disaster preparedness checklists.
  • Room-by-Room Safety Research: Leading up to Home Safety Month 2008, HSC conducted a survey of U.S. adults to gauge what actions, if any, they have taken in each room of the home to prevent the leading causes of injury. Results revealed that nearly half of respondents admitted they had not taken a single action to prevent the leading causes of home injury. When asked their reasons for not making safety improvements, 42 percent said they were not sure what actions to take and nearly a quarter said they couldn’t afford to make safety improvements.
  • Kids Prepare America: In September 2007, Home Safety Council launched the Kids Prepare America contest, challenging third and fourth graders to take the lead in helping prepare their families for emergency situations. The ten grand prize winners won a trip to Washington, DC to be recognized for their achievement at the Salute to Home Safety awards dinner. While in the nation’s capital, the winner visited Capitol Hill and had the opportunity to meet with their Senators and Representatives.
  • HSM Webinar: HSC held its third annual Home Safety Month Webinar titled, Putting Home Safety to Work. More than 120 Expert Network members, corporate partners and educators across the nation logged in to participate in the presentation.
  • National Exposure: HSC’s national exposure during June was staggering with two segments on NBC’s TODAY Show and a special advertising section in Good Housekeeping magazine. Other top placements include radio interviews on The Money Pit and on two Martha Stewart Radio Programs, Morning Living and Living Today, as well as feature coverage in Parenting Magazine, Prevention, Baby Talk, Women’s Health and Ladies’ Home Journal.
  • Media Results: Aggressive media outreach for the month-long campaign yielded nearly 200 million media impressions and thousands of placements in leading media outlets throughout the country. HSC executives conducted nearly 65 interviews, contributing HSC’s expert advice to feature stories and segments in leading magazines, top daily papers and nationally recognized broadcast outlets. Results included a comprehensive satellite and radio media tour as well as feature story placements in the San Francisco Chronicle, Orange County Register, Tulsa World, Newsday, Seattle Times, Minneapolis Star Tribune and more.
  • Web Traffic Results: During June, MySafeHome.org, HSC’s new, interactive Web site attracted more than 8,550 page views – making it the second most popular page after the HSC.org home page.
  • Congressional Outreach: HSC joined forces with Capitol Hill this Home Safety Month to help spread home safety messages. More than 20 members of Congress posted HSC’s safety tips and Home Safety Month materials on their Web sites or in their constituent newsletters. Representative Nancy Boyda (D-2nd KS) hosted a press conference during Home Safety Month on the importance of home safety and the role that Congress can play to raise awareness.
  • The Great Safety Adventure®: As part of its 10th anniversary tour, several public policy officials on the local and national level visited the Great Safety Adventure, the Home Safety Council’s “field trip on wheels” to help kick-off Home Safety Month. Among prominent officials who visited the Great Safety Adventure on its tour stops were Congresswoman Shelley Berkley (D-1st NV) and James M. Cavanaugh, Mayor of Goodyear, Arizona.
