U.S. Department of Homeland Security/FEMA

The Fire Safety Literacy Project is supported by the Home Safety Council along with 2003 and 2004 Fire Prevention and Safety Grant funding through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security/FEMA.

Winner of a 2006 Health Literacy Award from the Institute for Healthcare Advancement

An Overview of the Home Safety Literacy Project

The Home Safety Literacy Project provides effective, low-cost fire safety and disaster preparedness education materials that can be used by adults at all reading levels.

The materials are highly illustrated with minimal text and written in an Easy-to-Read style.

These educational materials are needed in virtually every community because some 90 million adults in the U.S. have low reading ability. Low literacy is a serious barrier to learning necessary home fire safety skills and to understanding and applying key fire protection and disaster preparedness measures in the home.

The Project messages include installing and maintaining adequate smoke alarm protection and emergency escape preparedness, and planning for and preparing to survive natural and human-caused disasters.
