Fire Prevention for Older Adults
Fire safety and survival begins with being prepared – at any age. Sit down with your family or caregiver and talk about ways you can prevent fires and burns in your home.
Circle a date on your calendar and make it a point to test your smoke alarms monthly. Also, be honest about your limitations, if you have any. There are special smoke alarms available that will help you wake up even if you have trouble hearing. It’s just as important to know how you’ll get out if smoke alarm does go off at home. Create a fire escape plan and hold fire drills at home at least twice a year.
