HSC Applauds Senate Passage of the Fall Prevention Awareness Day Resolution

On September 21, 2010, the Senate passed S. Res. 633 designating September 23 as National Falls Prevention Awareness Day. The Home Safety Council (HSC), the only national nonprofit organization solely dedicated to preventing injuries that occur in and around the home, applauds this congressional commitment to raise awareness and encourage falls prevention among older adults.

Falls are the leading cause of unintentional home injury and death in the U.S. and older adults are by far the population at greatest risk for unintentional falls with over one-third of all seniors age 65+ falling every year. The National Falls Prevention Awareness Day resolution was introduced to reduce this statistic and help older adults stay healthy for as long as possible.

National Falls Prevention Awareness Day demonstrates support for injury prevention efforts and the understanding that investment in prevention programs ultimately reduces healthcare treatment costs.
