With June's Close, HSC Celebrates another Successful Home Safety Month

With the end of June comes the end of another busy and successful Home Safety Month. The Home Safety Council sponsored a variety of activities to raise awareness about the importance of home safety from Capitol Hill to the home districts.

Kids Prepare America

Home Safety Council sponsored the first ever Kids Prepare America contest, which challenged third and fourth grade students to create a drawing showing the importance of being prepared in an emergency. The ten grand prize winners won a trip to Washington, D.C., along with their parent and teacher, where they were recognized for their achievement at the Home Safety Council awards dinner and given the opportunity to meet with the Senators and Representatives from their home states to be recognized for their achievement.

All in all, the group of students was able to visit over 20 Congressional offices. The students received very special treatment on Capitol Hill, having the opportunity to get their photo taken with members, as well receiving gifts, personal tours of the Capitol, and the chance to step inside the member's personal office. After the visit, several students' visits were profiled on their Members' Web sites.

This was truly a once in a lifetime experience for these lucky winners!

Great Safety Adventure Visits

As part of its 10th anniversary tour, the Great Safety Adventure, the Home Safety Council's "field trip on wheels" was visited by several public policy officials on the local and national level to help kick-off Home Safety Month. Among those local and national officials were:

  • James M. Cavanaugh, Mayor of Goodyear, Arizona, visited the Great Safety Adventure on May 27, 2008 when it made a stop at Centerra Mirage Elementary School in Goodyear.
  • Congresswoman Shelley Berkley (D-1st NV) made a visit to GSA when it stopped in her Nevada district. The Congresswoman also presented the Home Safety Council with a certificate, congratulating the organization on their work to make homes safer.

Home Safety Month Participation by Public Policy
Officials and Organizations

HSC joined forces with Capitol Hill this Home Safety Month to help spread its home safety message. Several Members of Congress included important home safety tips on their Web sites and in their constituent newsletters. More than 20 Members of Congress posted Home Safety Month related materials on their Web sites or in their constituent newsletters.

In addition, a Home Safety Month article appeared on the Citizen Corps Web site, encouraging the public to take simple steps to prevent home injuries and linking to the Home Safety Council Web site.

Press Conference

Representative Nancy Boyda (D-2nd KS) hosted a press conference during Home Safety Month on the importance of home safety and the role that Congress can play to raise awareness. Accompanying Representative Boyda were members of the safety community, including: Jan Stegelman of Safe Kids Kansas, Amy Bermudez of the Topeka Fire Department, and Shawnee County Sheriff's Sergeant Jay Simecka. Home Safety Month materials prepared by the Home Safety Council were highlighted and distributed at the press conference.

HSC would like to thank and congratulate all who took part in this year's Home Safety Month and helped to make it such a great success!
