Home Safety Month Comes to the Nation's Capital

The Great Safety Adventure (GSA) turned its wheels away from Maryland and into the beltway as it continued its tour into our nation's Capitol, Washington, D.C. Almost 400 participants toured the GSA at Clark Elementary on June 7, and the children seemed to understand how important home safety in and outside the home can be.

"I have a bike. I wear a helmet but I don't have elbow or knee pads!" one student said, after seeing Rover the Home Safety Hound's protective gear in his backyard.

A school nurse agreed when she said, "Yes, it is so important to wear protective gear. I see a lot of injuries from bikes -- they are so dangerous."

DC Public Schools Board of Education member Sekou Biddle was visiting the school on business and took some time to tour the GSA and accompanied one of the classes. Biddle was very interested in the exhibit and asked to be kept in touch with any future plans to visit the DC area.

The next day, June 8th, the GSA set up camp at Miner Elementary, where another 400 toured the exhibit.

Captain Rise Williams, Lt. John Pollock, Lt. Nathan Sims and Sgt. Sonja Flipping – all members of the DC Police School Safety Division, also took time to walk through the GSA and learn about home safety.

"(The GSA) was rather unique for teaching-especially elementary aged children," Lt. John Pollock said after his tour.

The Home Safety Council® (HSC) is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to preventing home related injuries that result in nearly 20,000 deaths and 21 million medical visits on average each year. Through national programs, partnerships and the support of volunteers, HSC educates people of all ages about home safety. HSC provides educational resources for teachers, policy makers, corporations as well as fire and life safety experts to help educate and empower families to take actions that will increase the safety of their homes.
