The Great Safety Adventure Teaches Children Important Safety Lessons

The Great Safety Adventure (GSA) continued its tour of the East Coast when it rolled into Marumsco Hills Elementary in Woodbridge, Virginia on June 13. With their Safety Ranger badges ready, the GSA staff led almost 400 rangers through the exhibit. Both children and adults alike became experts of home safety as they pointed out the dangers in Rover the Home Safety Hound's home. At the end of their Great Safety Adventure, all the Rangers felt prepared to point out and prevent dangers in their own homes.

"I almost choked on some asparagus last week. I guess I should have cut it into smaller pieces instead of trying to eat it one whole bite," one child said as he exited the GSA.

Joining our new safety rangers on a tour of the GSA was Christian Deschauer, District Outreach Representative for Congressman Tom Davis (R-11th VA), who walked through with a class of children, led by Safety Ranger Lisa. After the tour ended, Deschauer was able to speak in more detail about the dangers and preventions of home safety with tour manager, Joe Straughan.

The Great Safety Adventure is a traveling exhibit that teaches basic home safety skills to help children, families and communities learn about five important home safety risk areas: (1) falls; (2) poisoning; (3) fires and burns; (4) choking and suffocation and (5) drowning. Here's how it works - a semi-tractor trailer truck unfolds into a nearly 1,000 square foot animated home that children can explore for hands on safety tips.

The Home Safety Council also delivers The Great Safety Adventure's safety advice virtually through www.homesafetycouncil.org and www.CodeRedRover.org. By visiting the Web Sites, families can navigate through interactive home safety tools in English and Spanish including games, activities, home safety checklists and tips for parents and kids. Led by Rover, the Home Safety Hound, the award-winning sites provide home safety lessons that teachers can share in the classroom and children can access at home.
