An Overview of the Home Safety Literacy Project
The Home Safety Literacy Project provides effective, low-cost fire safety, disaster preparedness and poison prevention education materials that can be used by adults at all reading levels.
The materials are highly illustrated with minimal text and written in an Easy-to-Read style.
Easy-to-read educational materials are needed in every community because more than 90 million adults in the U.S. have low reading ability. Low literacy is a serious barrier to learning necessary home fire safety skills and to understanding and applying key fire protection, disaster preparedness and poison prevention measures in the home.
The Home Safety Literacy Project messages include installing and maintaining adequate smoke alarm protection and emergency escape preparedness, planning for and preparing to survive natural and human-caused disasters and taking steps to prevent poisonings in the home.
